TURKCELL HANDSET REGISTRATION
If you have a turkish, turkcell SIM card and you put it into a non-turkish handset, you will need to register the handset to be able to use the phone in Turkey. Your handset may work for 2 or 3 weeks, but then it will be 'locked' out and you will not be able to use it with your Turkcell SIM in turkey.
If you don't register your handset, phones seem to work for about 3 or 4 weeks, then "die".
If you wait for it to die, you will then have to wait for a couple of weeks AFTER registering it for it to start working again, so it seems it is better to go to register it BEFORE it dies.
If you register it BEFORE is dies, it should continue to work forever!
Registering your Handset
You used to have to go to the Turkcell Extra shop in Mugla, but as of Monday 8th October 2007, the Turkcell shop in Marmaris (near the Ataturk statue on the seafront) will register your handset (at last!).
You need to take your:-
- Handset
- SIM card
- Passport
- Contract - as of 7th June-they now need you to provide a contract (even with pre-paid).
If you were not given a contract or have lost it, they need to order it to be sent to you from Istanbul. It takes about a week to arrive. They cannot order these from the Marmaris Turkcell Shop, but if you call Turkcell Customer Services they will get a contract posted to you.
For 'Turkcell Customer Services' call 4440535, then press 77slowly for English. You will then be given some options "press 1 for blah blah etc" - Don't choose any option, just wait, then you will be put through to the operator. Give them your name and address (your turkish address) and they will get the contract posted to you- it takes about a week.
We did this because we wanted to keep our existing turkish phone number - it worked !
The alternative to waiting for your contract to be posted to you, is to take your passport and handset to theTurkcell shop in Marmaris and buy a new SIM card (this gives you a new number). They then give you a contract and you can register your handset there and then.
Alternatively...
Note - If you have not used your Turkcell SIM card for 6 months – it is dead! You need to get a new SIM card and register your handset.
(Ask in Turkcell shop if you can buy a new SIM card, but keep your old number - maybe they can – I don’t know).
CLAIM YOUR FREE TURKCELL CREDITS/UNITS
THIS NOW SEEMS TO HAVE STOPPED !! If it starts again. we'll let you know !
Through normal usage of your Turkcell SIM/phone, you accumulate free units. To claim these free units this is what you have to do….
1. On your phone type in *131# and press the green button or ‘SEND’.
You will then see the number of free units you have accumulated.
You can only claim them in groups of 50. (eg 50, 150, 200 etc.)
2. Send a SMS text message that says the number of units you wish to claim (eg.350) to 2255.
3. You will receive 2 SMS text messages from Turkcell in Turkish. The second one should confirm the number of units claimed and added to you account.
You can check your new balance either online or on your phone.
SIGN UP ON THE TURKCELL WEBSITE
If you register on the Turkcell Website, there are lots of different things you can do, such as:-
- Get GPRS / WAP settings sent to your phone
- Transfer units to another number
- Top up your phone whilst out of the country
- Switch international roaming on and off
- Look at your tariff, the number of units you have etc.
- and more...
To register/sign up with turkcell, do the following:-
1. Go to the Turkcell website (search yahoo for turkcell.com.tr).
2. CLICK on “Online Services”- sometimes inside a larger box. (if it’s all in Turkish, CLICK on the small “english” button).
3. On your phone send a SMS text message that says 'sifre' to 2222. In a few seconds you will receive a text back with your Turkcell “webpassword”.
4. Input your phone number (starting 535.., 537.. or whatever) and your webpassword.
You are in !
IF YOU LOSE YOUR TURKCELL SIM CARD/PHONE
They can give you a new SIM card with the same number as your previous turkcell number. It costs about 6YTL and you need to take your passport as ID. Any Turkcell shop should be able to do this.
YOU CAN TRANSFER UNITS FROM ONE TURKCELL NUMBER TO ANOTHER
You may be leaving Turkey, but have loads of spare units – You could sell them on or give them to someone else’s number!
You can do this by logging onto your account in the Turkcell.tr website (see previous)
Or you can now do this by sending an SMS message.
TIP – We had a problem using WAP (we needed it to get weather forecasts from windguru etc). After much investigation (getting the info from the Turkcell Technical Team when we were in Istanbul) it turned out that it wasn’t working because we had ROAMING switched on ! It may be different this year.
Hope this helps.....don't shoot us if it doesn't !!
