This is a very new page - under development. Share your tips and experiences - be a good yottie - get in touch.
(either below or email us peteandbo@yahoo.com)
- AVI's and DIVX - Coming soon - I'll explain what we have found out about watching, recording and copying in this latest film/TV format.
- CAT PROBLEM
If you are having a problem with cats leaving ‘smelly visitations’ on your boat, here are a couple of tips that may help – they both helped us. Note-they tend to ‘spray’ at entrances/doorways.
1. White PEPPER – sprinkle this on mats where they are likely to jump on, or area they may sniff around (main hatch entrance maybe). This wears off after a couple of days though.
(sv Amigos)
2. MOTHBALLS – these work a treat! (You can buy them in Tansas and YM supermarket sometimes - individual packets or in jars - not to be confused with the identical toilet freshener balls).
We put a couple in the bottom of cut-off plastic coke bottles and place them around the cockpit - especially if we are away for a long spell.
(sv Tololea)
It's also reported that cats hate walking on 'TIN FOIL' !
If this is a persistent, very unpleasant, problem and you are in YM - talk to the office.
- DVD's.
Blank DVD's. Some are a good quality and some are of poor quality. If you copy files, films etc. onto poor quality DVD's they degrade and the files get ruined. Here is a website that lists in 3 varying categories good and bad blank dvd's to buy. Makes such as Sony,TDK,Memorex etc. are all listed somewhere, as well as the more obscure makes! http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm. You can copy and paste this address
- MOSQUITOES
There is a special spray from AVON that it is generally agreed – they absolutely hate. It's called skin-so-softSkin So Soft and the bottle is white. It is a ”Soft and Fresh” dry oil body spray. (There's an Avon lady in the YM office and she says it's a very popular product with the yotties - for stopping mozzies). Scottish National Park guys apparently use it too!
OFF is good too, but more chemicals.
Pete uses the turkish LEMON liquid that is sold everywhere, which works, but not for long periods. (At least he smells nice).
- You can help the mozzy situation by being a bit more aware of their habitat. eg. If you have a dingy on davits, or in the water for a long period and it collects rain water, mozzies will breed in a matter of days. This also applies to buckets or anywhere where water can gather – it apparently only takes 3 days for them to start breeding. It’s good to be considerate to your onboard neighbours if you are leaving your boat for a long period.
Also, they don’t like lemon and diesel - hence the diesel spraying around the Marina at dusk.
- PRESERVING FOOD
This method is good for preserving all sorts of things
Eg. Cooked Meats – chicken etc. Vegetables - peppers, mushrooms, carrots, etc.
- Sterilise some airtight jars and lids (eg. Jars that contained Jam, Marmalade, Pickles, etc)
To do this, you must put them in a large pan, cover them in boiling water and simmer for at least 15minutes. Put a hankie or something in the bottom of the pan first as they may jump up and down.
- Let the jars cool down
- Cook meat, vegetables etc. in olive oil – can add, garlic chilli etc.
- Put the food into the jars whilst still hot. Ensure that there is plenty of olive oil with the food.
- Seal the lids and turn the jars upside down.
- Leave for 15 minutes or so, then turn them back up the right way –you should hear a little “pop” from the lid. This means that it is airtight.
The Dutch lady who gave us this tip has stored food like this for up to 3 years! (I tasted a 2 year old cooked chicken pieces in a casserole type sauce that was 2 years old – it was perfect – amazing!)
I think it is handy for long passages.
A New Zealand friend of mine also uses a similar method for storing cheeses. (sv Chanticleer)
TIPS IF YOU ARE IN TURKEY / MARMARIS
BACON
There is a shop in Marmaris that sells good quality back bacon. It is sold in big packs, so people tend to buy a pack and share it. Ask around or ask us.
